A strong collaborative relationship between Rwanda Ministry of Health, University of Rwanda, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and the University of Kigali Teaching Hospital ( CHUK), has been established to accomplish this goal. Rwanda faculty have traveled to University of Cincinnati. Rwanda trainees will be hosted at University of Cincinnati in 2023. He cared for many heart failure and rheumatic valve patients at his academic practice at CHUK hospital, in Butare. His attempt to secure a cardiology fellowship was limited due to the lack of programs in the region. Due to his strong academic activities, he secured a pulmonary/critical care fellowship at Addis Ababa University, with completion in 2022. Dr. Sibomana shares the belief of having subspecialty training in Rwanda. He now teaches on our curriculum on the ground in Rwanda as well as online. The program began as a virtual educational platform involving internal medicine residents at 4 teaching hospitals in Rwanda. This has grown to having bi-directional exchange of University of Rwanda and University of Cincinnati faculty visit on the ground to continue our knowledge exchange and collaboration. As a result of the collaboration between Dr. Gloria Mukeshimana (left), Rwandan cardiologist, and Dr. Mehran Attari, a U.S. electrophysiologist (right), a bi-ventricular pacing and defibrillating device was placed for the first time in the history of Rwandan cardiology. This was made possible by a generous grant from Medtronic. The week was spent at King Faisal Hospital performing procedures in the cath lab, providing didactic conferences, attending inpatient rounds and attending outpatient clinic. The devices implanted were made possible by a Medtronic grant. The first bi-ventricular pacing and defibrillator devices were implanted during this visit. The first lead extraction was also performed during this visit. It was a very successful week, that strengthened collaboration, knowledge, and advancement in cardiovascular disease in Rwanda. He spent 7 days shadowing all aspects of the division. This included the cardiac Cath lab, ICU, stress lab, MRI, Echo, clinic, and simulation lab. He presented during cardiology grand rounds, “The State of Cardiology in Rwanda.” He also had a chance to meet many of our fellows, and faculty. He attended our conferences, as well as a journal club dinner. It was a wonderful chance for Dr. Amha to get to know our facility and faculty. This requires an enormous financial resource, and not a sustainable means to train Rwandan physicians. The UC Rwanda Initiative has collaborated to support a cardiology fellowship training program in Kigali through partnering with Rwandan ministry of health, Rwandan academic institutions, and US academic institutions. Through the COVID - 19 pandemic, a remote teaching platform was created for internal medicine residents in Rwanda working in the four major referral hospitals. In addition to weekly online conferences since 2020, U.S. faculty have traveled to Rwanda to teach at the bedside and give didactic conferences to the University of Rwanda trainees. This allows Rwandan physicians to train and practice cardiovascular disease in their home country.
